DESCRIPTION:The Second annual SoCal ASQ meeting at Cal Poly.Methodologies R
ole in Failure People or Process\, as the name implies\, looks directly a
t the role of people versus process in a project’s success or failure. T
he focus on process is a needed component\, but does not obviate the need
to manage people.  Unfortunately\, the trend over the last fifteen years
has been to focus on process and reduce the project to a checklist of task
 s.  This has created a culture that neglects the value of a manager with
people skills. This presentation uses case studies and class interaction
to underscore the how people make or break the project. Attendees learn t
he importance of working closer with the people on the project by looking
at four areas: The Project Manager\; Project Inception\; Project Methodolo
gy\; Technical team members. By the end of the presentation\, attendees wi
ll understand the importance of balancing people and process and where to
focus their efforts. The benefit of being more involved with the inner wor
kings of the project will be evident.

DESCRIPTION:Poor quality in projects results in increased costs and late de
liveries. In most cases\, Poor quality can be traced to events that happen
ed prior to the project commencing.  Long before Quality Managers and Pro
ject Managers are involved\, expectations get set and slowly diverge among
the various stakeholders. This presentation focuses on a number of techni
ques learned while recovering projects that greatly improve the chances fo
r success. It introduces the concept of a Guidance Team that gets involved
with the project at the customer’s inception stage. The presentation co
vers:Implementation of a Guidance Team to focus the customer. Project team
involvement in the customer's initiative inception. Setting customer expe
ctations early to help define critical to quality items.Ensuring the right
team is involved to meet expectations.Tools used to monitor stakeholder a
lignment. It focuses on the customer interaction. This method is very effec
tive in controlling expectations and making sure the project does not wand
 er.

DESCRIPTION:Experience with red projects has more value than recovering the
m—avoiding them is the real objective. This presentation focuses on a nu
mber of techniques learned while recovering projects that greatly improve
the chances for success. It introduces the concept of a Guidance Team that
gets involved with the project at the customer inception stage and follow
s the project and team through to the project completion. The presentation
covers:\n\nThe concept and responsibilities of a Guidance Team. \nInvolve
ment at the customer's inception of the project. \nSetting customer expect
ations early. \nEnsuring the right team is involved to meet expectations.
\nMethods to ensure a smooth transition as changes occur. \nAreas that cau
se projects problems. \n\nIt focuses on the customer interaction. This met
hod is very effective in controlling expectations and making sure the proj
ect does not wander. At the end of the presentation the attendee will unde
rstand steps they can take as well as processes to implement in their orga
nization to avert project failure. This presentation is on an advanced sub
ject and takes one-hour and part of the Back From Red Lecture Series on pr

DESCRIPTION:Estimates for the annual cost of project failure are as high as
two   trillion dollars a year.  The rates for  projects being at risk
are in the 60-70% range\, and a quarter of all project's problems are so
bad they are simply canceled prior completion.  Preferably\, all project
s will run according to plan. However\, moving from a 60% failure rate to
0%  is unrealistic.  First\, organizations must understand what it is
that makes their projects fail.  Reasons range from methodology to human
failure to poorly understood concepts to scope creep. Analyzing project
s as systems uncovers all the factors that can contribute to failure.\nBa
ck From Red: Recovering Failing Projects describes the key elements in re
covering red projects.  It is based on the process developed while recov
ering dozens of projects. It covers:\n\nThe prerequisites for a recovery:
The steering committee's responsibilities in realizing there is a problem
to be solved.\nThe four-step process to recover a project: \n
\nAudit: The unbiased acquisition of data about the people and the project
.\nAnalysis: Analyzing the data to determine root causes of problems and d
eveloping the new project plan.\nNegotiation: Arriving at an acceptable so
lution for both the supplier and the customer.\nExecute: Implementing the
plan and corrective actions.\n\n\nThe major ways to keep projects from fai
ling.\n\nThe recovery process focuses on the human factors for project fa
ilure. In other words\, the work one must do in dealing with the red proj
ect\, the dynamics of the team\, stakeholders\, and executives. Managemen
t style and technique are very important in the recovery\, therefore mult
iple tips will be provided on being an effective leader. It also discusse
s the role of technology and the methodology in the failure. There are nu
merous case studies drawn from a variety of projects to reinforce the con
cepts presented.\nAt the end of the presentation the attendee will underst
and the steps of a recovery process\, the responsibilities of the people
involved and the requirement for realization that there is a problem.

DESCRIPTION:Risk is in everything we do in life\, from going to the store t
o managing our projects. If we understand the risks associated with someth
ing we are doing\, we can address the risks better and in many cases avoid
them all together. Unfortunately\, risk often scares us and as a result\,
we ignore it. This course identifies types of risks on projects and ways
to lessen their effects.\n\nWhat you will cover:\n* Understanding the basi
cs about issues\, risks\, and probabilities.\n* Knowing the difference bet
ween quantifiable and non-quantifiable risk.\n* Calculating the impact on
schedule and budget.\n* Risk registers.\n* How to know when too many risks
are firing.\n* Determining how to reduce risk’s effects.\n* The politic
s of risk—getting management to understand. \n\nNotes:\nThis course is h
ighly participatory\, using exercises to reinforce the concepts\, looks at
actual examples from projects\, and is targeted for all levels of project
  managers

DESCRIPTION:Most projects’ problems exist long before there is approval f
or the project to begin. Unrealistic expectations\, misaligned goals\, imp
roper supplier involvement\, and poor definition are a few reasons that pr
ojects go awry. Therefore\, looking at different methods to start projects
—getting engaged with the customer long before the project starts—is c
ritical.\n\nThis class introduces the concepts for integrating the supplie
r with the customer. It covers various degrees of achieving this\, and foc
uses on the customer interaction. This method is effective in controlling
expectations and making sure the project does not wander.\n\nWhat you will
cover:\n* Guidance teams and how a small team can improve project initiat
ion.\n* Integration of project teams with the customer.\n* Measuring and m
aintaining stakeholder alignment.\n* Setting and maintaining customer expe
ctations.\n* Ensuring the right team is involved to meet expectations.\n*
Methods to ensure a smooth transition as changes occur.\n* Areas that caus
e projects problems. \n\nNotes:\nThis is an advanced project management to
pic dealing with organizational change and management concepts and is appl
icable to project managers\, program managers\, PMO staff\, and managers i
n any organization the needs to improve project performance.
