It should be about responsibility and accountability not blame. Cultural values simply reflect individual values - this is the place to start - in the mirror. Generally society will accept apologies and a commitment to resolve - most leaders seem to think that they are above the law so this natural rule of law gets replaced by lawyers and liturgy. We in the UK are beginning to adopt this insidious "blame and claim" mentality - it is not our natural culture but media, recession and lack of self resposibility are a serious threat to this. People dont like looking in the mirror, even less, claiming responsibility.

One of my favorite lines from "No Country for Old Men" says it all. "All the time ya spend trying to get back what's been took from ya, more is going out the door. After a while you just have to try to get a tourniquet on it."

This approach is exceedingly laudible and has great promise within the comfortable confines of a business or other organization. Making systemic changes that can help prevent failure and don't encumber process is the ultimate goal. Rage, however, sells very well outside of organizational walls. Consequently, as leaders, we need to be prepared to face the music for anything does or even has the potential to become public. Transparency and honesty give you the opportunity to frame the issues, lest you get framed by them.

People have very short memories and are happy enough when people make mistakes from which they benefit. During the credit boom when people who were bad credit risks were given huge amounts of credit people took the money and ran, spending as if there was no tomorrow. Now things have gone the other way and they have lost money they search for a scapegoat whilst omitting to look in the mirror at the culpable individual about to start shaving or putting on lipstick. Whilst there are shysters hiding in the shadows and mendacious people who have plundered the system, too many people offered themselves up as lambs to the slaughter rather than applying sensible due diligence
